SUMMARY

USK CONSULTING AFRICA, a leading Environmental Engineering and Geotechnical specialist headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa, is hiring a seasoned Drilling Operations Manager to lead complex geotechnical and exploration drilling programs supporting sustainable, innovation-driven projects across Africa (Johannesburg Metropolitan Area, South Africa).

ROLE OVERVIEW

As the Drilling Operations Manager, you’ll own end-to-end delivery of drilling operations, balancing field leadership, project management, safety, and environmental stewardship. You’ll coordinate multidisciplinary teams, optimize fleet and consumables, drive quality assurance, and embed a culture of zero harm while delivering projects safely, on time, and within budget.

JOB DEFINITION

• Plan, lead, and coordinate daily geotechnical/exploration drilling activities across multiple sites

• Manage crews, rigs, tooling, and logistics to maximize utilization and reduce downtime

• Enforce safety (HSE) and environmental compliance; conduct toolbox talks and site audits

• Build and control project schedules, budgets, and resource plans; track variances and risks

• Maintain accurate operational records, shift reports, and QA/QC documentation (cores/RC)

• Collaborate with engineering and environmental teams to meet technical specifications

• Identify process improvements (cycle times, penetration rates, bit life) and cost savings

• Oversee supplier/contractor performance and inventory of spares, fuel, and consumables

• Lead incident investigations, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives

• Ensure consistent sample integrity, data quality, and reporting to clients and stakeholders

REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Geology, or related field

• Proven experience managing geotechnical or exploration drilling operations

• Strong project management skills (planning, budgeting, scheduling, risk control)

• Deep knowledge of drilling safety protocols and environmental compliance

• Proficiency in cost control, commercial awareness, and vendor management

• Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills

• Analytical, decisive, and solutions-oriented; comfortable with field conditions

• Experience in Environmental/Geotechnical projects is advantageous

• Ability to work on-site full-time in the Johannesburg Metropolitan Area

• Valid driver’s license and medical fitness suitable for field work
