Cobre Begins New Diamond Drilling at Ngami Copper Project in Botswana
Cobre begins diamond drilling at Botswana’s Ngami Copper Project to expand Cosmos target resources and advance its position in Africa’s copper belt.
Cobre Limited has commenced a new diamond drilling campaign at its Ngami Copper Project (NCP) in Botswana, marking the next phase of exploration aimed at unlocking the project’s full copper potential. The program focuses on the Cosmos target, an emerging zone of copper and silver mineralisation located approximately eight kilometres from the Comet deposit, where earlier drilling confirmed significant sulphide-hosted copper. This initiative is part of Cobre’s broader strategy to expand resources across the Ngami licence area and solidify its position in one of Africa’s most prospective copper belts.
Ngami currently hosts 11.5 million tonnes of mineral resources grading 0.52 percent copper, containing an estimated 60,300 tonnes of copper metal. The new diamond drilling campaign will comprise two deep holes, specifically designed to evaluate mineralisation grades and the potential for higher-grade zones at Cosmos. Initial geochemical and geophysical surveys have already identified copper and silver anomalies in the area, and the new drill data will play a pivotal role in refining Cobre’s geological models and targeting strategies. The results are expected to guide future drilling priorities across the NCP licence, supporting resource expansion and potential scoping studies.
Cobre CEO Adam Wooldridge highlighted Cosmos as a highly promising discovery, noting that early indicators point to the presence of copper-silver mineralisation potentially suitable for conventional open-pit or underground mining. The company’s work at Ngami builds on a growing pipeline of copper projects in Botswana, which has become a focal point for international exploration investment. The country’s stable regulatory environment, strong infrastructure, and proximity to existing copper operations make it an attractive jurisdiction for development.
Cobre also maintains active exploration across its Kitlanya East and West projects in Botswana, which have drawn the attention of major players including BHP, reflecting increasing confidence in the region’s geological potential. The current drilling program at Cosmos is therefore strategically significant, as it could define the next phase of copper exploration at Ngami and advance the project toward resource expansion and economic assessment.
For Botswana, Cobre’s ongoing success further reinforces the nation’s emergence as a key copper exploration hub in Southern Africa. The country’s expanding portfolio of discoveries aligns with global demand for copper, a critical metal in renewable energy systems, electric vehicles, and transmission infrastructure, positioning Botswana as a growing contributor to the world’s clean energy supply chain.
Mini-Glossary
- Diamond Drilling: A precise drilling technique that uses a diamond-tipped bit to extract core samples, providing detailed geological data.
- Anomaly: A geophysical or geochemical feature that indicates the possible presence of mineralisation.
- Sulphide-Hosted Copper: Copper minerals that occur within sulphide minerals such as chalcopyrite, often associated with significant deposits.
- Scoping Study: A preliminary economic assessment evaluating a project’s potential viability and development options.
- Contained Copper: The total amount of recoverable copper estimated within a resource deposit.
- Open-Pit / Underground Mining: Methods of mineral extraction, with open-pit used for near-surface deposits and underground applied to deeper ore bodies.
