AngloGold Ashanti Plans $900 Million Gold Mine Expansion Across Africa and Brazil

AngloGold Ashanti plans a $900 million gold mine expansion in Tanzania, Guinea and Brazil, targeting up to 450,000 additional ounces by 2030.

AngloGold Ashanti has unveiled an ambitious investment programme worth up to $900 million to expand its existing gold mining operations in Tanzania, Guinea, and Brazil, strengthening its long-term production capacity and positioning the company for sustained growth in the global gold market. Announced on November 5, 2026, the three-year expansion strategy is expected to deliver an additional 300,000 to 450,000 ounces of annual gold production by 2030. Alongside these investments, the company will continue increasing production at its Obuasi gold mine in Ghana. The initiative reflects AngloGold Ashanti's strategy of prioritising high-return brownfield developments, which utilise established mining infrastructure to increase output while controlling capital expenditure and operational risks.

Tanzania is expected to receive the largest share of the planned investment, with AngloGold Ashanti allocating between $480 million and $580 million to expand its Geita gold mine. The operation, one of Tanzania's major gold-producing assets, is targeted to increase annual production to approximately 600,000 ounces by 2030, compared with 492,000 ounces recorded in 2025. The planned expansion will focus on maximising the mine's existing operational capabilities and improving production efficiency. By building on established infrastructure, AngloGold Ashanti aims to increase gold recovery and strengthen the long-term economic performance of the Geita operation. The investment could also contribute to Tanzania's mining economy through increased demand for local contractors, equipment suppliers, technical services, and skilled labour.

In Guinea, AngloGold Ashanti plans to invest approximately $70 million in its Siguiri gold mine, targeting an additional 100,000 ounces of annual production. The mine produced approximately 289,000 ounces in 2025, making the proposed expansion a potentially significant increase in its operating capacity. The investment is expected to support improvements in mining and processing activities while taking advantage of established infrastructure. For Guinea, where mineral exports represent an important component of economic activity, higher gold production could contribute to export earnings, government revenues, and employment opportunities. The project could also reinforce the country's position as an important gold-producing jurisdiction in West Africa, although its ultimate economic contribution will depend on production performance, operating costs, and the regulatory environment.

Outside Africa, the company intends to allocate between $200 million and $250 million to its Cuiabá gold operation in Brazil. The proposed investment is expected to increase annual production by approximately 75,000 ounces, building on the mine's 2025 output of 194,000 ounces. This expansion forms part of AngloGold Ashanti's broader strategy to strengthen productivity across its international mining portfolio without relying exclusively on the construction of new mines. The company expects its brownfield investments to benefit from established processing facilities, existing operational expertise, and the ability to deploy capital more efficiently than would typically be possible with entirely new mining developments.

Meanwhile, AngloGold Ashanti is continuing the operational ramp-up of its Obuasi gold mine in Ghana, another important component of its African growth strategy. Unlike the three separately budgeted expansion projects, Obuasi's production increase forms part of an ongoing operational recovery and optimisation programme. The mine has experienced operational challenges that affected production performance, making improvements in underground mining efficiency, equipment availability, and operational reliability particularly important. A successful ramp-up could strengthen Ghana's gold production capacity while supporting employment, local procurement, and the broader economic contribution of the country's mining industry.

According to Reuters, AngloGold Ashanti expects its proposed expansion projects to generate real internal rates of return exceeding 35%, based on a long-term gold price assumption of approximately $3,000 per ounce. This projected return highlights the company's emphasis on investments capable of generating substantial financial value relative to their development costs. Brownfield expansions are generally considered less capital-intensive than greenfield projects because they can utilise existing processing plants, transport infrastructure, power systems, and established mining facilities. However, actual investment returns will remain dependent on gold prices, operating costs, project execution, and the achievement of planned production targets.

AngloGold Ashanti Chief Executive Officer Alberto Calderon has emphasised that the investment programme is intended to unlock additional value from the company's existing mining portfolio. By concentrating on capital-efficient projects with the potential to deliver higher-margin gold production, the company aims to improve profitability while limiting the financial and operational uncertainties associated with entirely new developments. This approach is particularly relevant as international mining companies face increasing pressure to balance production growth with disciplined capital allocation, rising operating expenses, and shareholder expectations.

The expansion announcement follows a strong financial performance in the third quarter of 2026. AngloGold Ashanti reported earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) of $1.568 billion, representing a 12% increase from the $1.4 billion recorded during the corresponding quarter of 2025. The improvement was supported primarily by stronger realised gold prices, which increased from an average of $3,490 per ounce in the third quarter of 2025 to $4,239 per ounce in the third quarter of 2026. Higher gold prices have strengthened the company's revenue-generating capacity and provided additional financial flexibility to fund expansion projects across its global portfolio.

Despite improved profitability, AngloGold Ashanti continues to face cost pressures affecting its mining operations. The company reported production cash costs of approximately $1,534 per ounce during the third quarter of 2026, representing an increase of around 3.65% compared with the preceding quarter. Rising gold-linked royalties and higher fuel expenses were among the factors contributing to the increase. These pressures demonstrate the importance of operational efficiency and cost management, particularly as mining companies seek to maintain attractive profit margins while expanding production. Although elevated gold prices can support stronger earnings, sustained increases in energy expenses, royalties, and other operational inputs could partially offset the financial benefits of higher production.

AngloGold Ashanti has nevertheless reaffirmed its full-year 2026 production guidance of between 2.8 million and 3.17 million ounces, indicating continued confidence in its ability to meet annual operating targets. The company produced approximately 2.164 million ounces of gold during the first nine months of 2026, providing a foundation for its final-quarter production objectives. Its longer-term expansion programme is intended to complement existing operations by introducing additional production capacity toward the end of the decade, potentially strengthening the company's position among the world's leading gold producers.

For Africa's mining industry, AngloGold Ashanti's planned investment programme represents a significant opportunity to strengthen gold production capacity, attract mining-related economic activity, and encourage further development of established mineral assets. Tanzania and Guinea stand to benefit directly from increased capital expenditure, while Ghana could experience additional economic gains if the Obuasi production ramp-up progresses successfully. Higher production volumes may support export revenues, government royalty collections, employment, and opportunities for domestic suppliers. However, the scale of these benefits will depend on successful project implementation, responsible environmental management, workforce development, and the extent to which local businesses participate in mining supply chains. More broadly, the investment strategy highlights the potential of brownfield expansion as a practical pathway for sustaining Africa's gold mining competitiveness while improving capital efficiency and supporting longer-term economic development.
